The wide sky – an archive – by Liz Solo

Full Website launch Wednesday, September 27, 2017

Following the successful Second Life launch of ‘the wide sky’, Liz Solo’s Archive’s Virtual Installation and Museum Exhibit currently housed on the Odyssey Simulator in Virtual Space, IOTA: DATA is pleased to launch the Archive website, home to nine new machinimas here:

Often recognizable for its use of Second Life aesthetics, machinima takes on a video game ideology by creating an online space with a defined structure and goal for its participant, but interrupts this traditional gaming relationship through unexpected interventions that challenge the built environments’ social and political infrastructure.

In ‘the wide sky’, users may view the story in linear time or opt for the interactive timeline and be presented with a choice at the end of every video, generating alternative outcomes.

“The Wide Sky” is a story based on the fragmented memories of a scientist desperately trying to make sense of her deteriorating world. “During a recent archeological dig into the deep future, researchers discovered a damaged memory sphere embedded in the floor of an uninhabited forest planet. Though much of the sphere was corrupted some of the data was retrievable. Liz Solo is a performance artist, media artist and a musician. She creates media and live performances that incorporate online virtual communities and MMORPGs. She is a founding member of The Black Bag Media Collective (based in St. John’s) and the Second Front (an online collective) and is a composer and performer with The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse (an online orchestra). Her performances, videos and online events continue to be screened and presented around the world.

IOTA is an Invigorator of unconventional artistic and social practices, focusing on art forms based in technology, social interventions, and life science. IOTA has three distinct wings: INSTITUTE for research, INTRA for public interventions and STUDIOS for the support of its roster of artists. Senses Places at Odyssey/Open Sim Conference

sensesplacesopensim_030Odyssey is proud to provide a home to Senses Places – a dance based mixed reality project by Isabel Valverde and collaborators. The project runs a mixed reality participatory environment on the Odyssey Simulator in Second Life and this week presented performances and demonstrations at the 2016 Open Sim Community Conference.

Here are some images from one of the performances at the conference.Dancers and other participants in RL (real life) link to their avatars via a webcam interface. The webcam picks up mocap points on the dancer’s body and translates the movement (via the internet) to the dancer’s avatar in world.

Senses Places is a dance-technology collaborative project creating a playful mixed reality performance environment for audience participation. Generating whole body multimodal interfacings keen to a somatic cross-cultural approach, the project stresses an integration of simultaneous local and remote connections, where participants and environments meet towards a kinesthetic/synesthetic engagement.

Tuning the audience participants into several whole body modes of physical-virtual body-body and body-environment interactions, within a physical and virtual environment (Second Life©), Senses Places re-purposes recent Web 2.0 enabled game devices with a synergetic/semantic approach to interface design. The interfaces include, video and avatar mediations via Webcam, Wiimote©, and Kinect©, plus a biometric device.

Through an inclusive process engaging kinesthetic empathy, Senses Places deepens contemporary dance practices, such as, Contact Improvisation and Butoh, interweaving Eastern-Western somatic based practices, like, Tai Chi, Yôga, Body-Mind Centering, Release, and Alexander Techniques. The improvisation evolves in a sharing of corporealized places, times, and energies, encouraging a fuller experience of the moment.

Emerging embodiments, realities, and cultures are generated by the multi-participant playful involvement as the participants follow, act upon, and respond to each others’ physical bodies, video mediations, avatar moves, and/or environmental changes. Climate related body-environment activity is affected through wireless communication, linking biometric inputs and environmental device actuators, such as, temperature-light/color, breathing-smoke/wind modulations.

Senses Places wishes to contribute to enlarge the range and interconnectedness of sensory-perceptions within the already complex practice of group improvisation, proposing a constructive and transformative means of inter-subjective and collective socialization, reversing the dead end substitution, gender and movement cultural stereotypification, and instrumentalization of bodies by avatars in social networks, such as Second Life.

Al Hansen’s “Car Bibbe”

Today Bibbe Hansen restaged the Al Hansen happening “Car Bibbe” at Howl Arts in New York City. To mark the event we have released a machinima of The Second Front performance of “Car Bibbe” that took place on Odyssey earlier this year. The performance stars The Second Front (Patrick Lichty, Bibbe Hansen, Scott Killdal, Liz Solo, Doug Jarvis, Yael Gilks) with special guests Feels Empty, Channing Oh, Michael Green and Phreek Fargis and was directed by Bibbe Hansen. Call for Installations for Odyssey on Craft

Call for Installations and Performances

The Odyssey Simulators have opened a new sim in Craft World and we are looking for installations to present in the Fall of 2016 and throughoutradio 2017. These installations will run for four month periods at Odyssey on Craft.

We are seeking work related to themes involving The Future, Dystopian Visions of Society, Cyberpunk Culture, Surveillance Culture, Steampunk Culture and/or Transhumanism. We are offering 10,000 prims (negotiable) on a quarter sim space at Odyssey on Craft. Projects containing a performance element are welcomed.

Proposals can be sent to odysseyartssl@yahoo.ca with CRAFT INSTALLATION as the subject heading. Proposals can be simple and need only include an artists biography or CV and a brief description of the installation you would like to create. Feel free to include any other information such as special technical requirements or relevant links.

the machine

At lonmachineposterlrgg last  “the machine” – a new film by Liz Solo and co-produced by The Black Bag Media Collective and Roles 4 Women with machinima shot on Odyssey – has premiered!

“the machine” combines HD video with machinima to tell a futuristic story set in a desolate Newfoundland city. This “cyberpunk fairytale” stars Melanie Caines and Liz Solo with special appearances by Lutius Elijah Whalen, Jeannie Harris. Zoe Elizabeth Howard and Fau Ferdinand (avatar of artist Yael Gilks). Gorgeous Production Design by Barry Newhook and Yael Gilks with a amazing score featuring the music of Tom Lee with other soundscore by Kevin MacLeod, Sam Hall and Liz Solo.

The piece masterfully merges the real and the virtual and draws the viewer into a future world where art has been outlawed – powerful performances and mesmerizing machinima sequences – watch for it!

The World premiere screening took place at the 2nd TrixXxieFest at the LSPU Hall in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Friday June 24, 2017. Odyssey is proud to be a part of this project and we wish all involved great success as the film now heads to the festival circuit.

AOM at Interaccess

On Sunday February 23 the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse gave a Special Matinee Performance live @ Interaccess in Toronto and simultaneously on the Odyssey Simulator. Tina Pearson (Victoria) of AOM was in attendance in Toronto to conduct the performance and give a workshop and artist talk.

As part of David Quiles Guilló’s Wrong Biennial, the Odyssey Art and Performance Simulator pavilion in Second Life, entitled Leave Nothing Untouched, will hold a reception/performance supporting its exhibition.

Second Front will present inaugural performances of their new work, “The Abramovic Trilogy” – Picasso’s Baby; The Avatar is Present, and The Second Font Method.
Other works on display at Exhibit A will include Al Hansen’s Alice Denham in 48 Seconds or Less by Bibbe Hansen/Virtual Fluxus; Burning Gnome by Patrick Lichty/Second Front and and installation of the machinima Red Dog for Freddie Herko by Second Front.

TooManyFlowersposter2Too Many Flowers is an installation that revolves around the topics of body autonomy, female sexual violence, gendered imbalances of power, the subjugation of women, rape culture, and abortion.

To commemorate the upcoming 43rd anniversary of the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision (January 22nd 1973) Odyssey is proud to open “Too Many Flowers” – an installation by New Media and Visual Artist Nebulosus Severine.

“Too Many Flowers” is a provocative work that examines the condition of female sexuality in the modern world. Beautiful and provocative, this installation (like much of Severine’s online work) is not simply artwork that one views – it is an exploratory journey to be experienced.

Join us on Saturday January 16th from 10 AM to 2 PM SLT to celebrate the official opening on Odyssey.

Visual artist who has worked with acrylic & oil painting, ink drawings on paper, digital composition, printmaking, and New Media art. Works in virtual/New Media art under the name Nebulosus Severine. Completed an AA with distinction in Fine Arts at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield CT in 2015. Has also studied at the University of Hartford (West Hartford, CT) and Manchester Community College (Manchester, CT).

Artist Statement
My art, an extension of my consciousness, is continuously evolving; it aims to elicit a visceral response in the viewer or participant. I am quite particular in my use of color to capture emotion & mood; I create what I feel & perceive through observation and introspection.

Much of my recent work has been created in the virtual world of Second Life, where I have been exhibiting since 2005. I am drawn to New Media arts and to virtual communities for their groundbreaking experimental and interactive potential.

The Odyssey Contemporary Art and Performance Simulators are dedicated to contemporary art with a focus on performance art. Odyssey’s online spaces includes a member-owned virtual simulator in Second Life and a group of simulators on the experimental macGRID, (newly launched by McMaster University).

Founded in 2005 the Odyssey Simulators provide studio space and host projects by an array of International artists and groups – in particular artists working in online synthetic environments. Odyssey also provides educational resources, studio and exhibition space and technical assistance to support artists working in virtual places. Currently managed and curated by artist Liz Solo, Odyssey is home to many working artists including The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, Bibbe Hansen, Alan Sondheim, Patrick Lichty and the Senses Places Project/Isabel Valverde.

Odyssey produces a semi-annual Performance Art Festival and has presented scores of artists over the years including Joseph Delappe, Eva and Franco Mattes, Micha Cardenas, Elle Mehrmand, The Second Front, SaveMe Oh, Stelarc and many more.
